Monday evening Ridgeline Rides with MTB Eugene!

Starting Monday May 31st, MTB Eugene will begin hosting weekly rides on the
Ridgeline trail system on Monday evenings at 6pm. We'll meet at 6pm at the
corner of Martin Street and Canyon Drive, at the bottom of Headwaters trail.
These rides will be beginner friendly, and we will have frequent regroups. If we
get enough people showing up, maybe we'll split up based on fitness and pace,
but please don't come out looking to race or hammer out a training ride. We'll
put in at least 8 miles, and can easily add more miles through the use of loops,
some gravel roads, and a few paved ones. Add in the commute from home to the
trail and back, and you've got yourself a good workout.

Helmets are absolutely required for anyone joining us. Lights should not be
needed, as the ride will end by 8pm. Participants are expected to be respectful
to other trail users, and to follow IMBA's Rules of the Trail. Our goal is to
expose more people to the Ridgeline trail system, and prove to other trail users
that MTB riders are polite and respectful people who can share a trail without
conflict.

We're looking for various DOD members to step up and help lead these rides. If
you are interested in coming out for a few rides, and feel comfortable leading a
group, let me know. We can work out a schedule so that we always have a few
"guides" but so that no one has to come out every Monday evening.

These rides will make for a geat after work escape, and I hope people will start
to come out and ride the Ridgeline trails more frequently.

See ya on the trail.....

Urgent action needed to support our local trails! 4-20-2010

Attention Mountain Bikers and Trail Supporters!! In light of the City of
Eugene's recent decision to ban Mountain bikes from the Ribbon trail (the newest
addition to the Ridgeline trail system) we are going to go to the Eugene City
Council Meeting next Monday to let them know that we are disappointed in this
decision. We will present numerous reasons why Mountain bikers should be allowed
to share the use of this trail, as well as many of our other local trails. We
hope to inform the City Council that this issue is important to many people, and
educate them about how more mountain bike trails are consistent with the City's
stated goals and values.

Read this article for background on the Ribbon trail decision:
http://tinyurl.com/ribbontrail

We hope to bring together a large group of polite and respectable cyclists to
attend this Council meeting to show our strength in numbers. We will have a few
designated folks speak in front of Council, and we want everyone else there just
to show the size and diversity of our group.

We are asking people to show up in front of the City Council Chambers (On Pearl
Street between 7th and 8th) at 7pm on Monday April 26th. We will gather and go
over some info, and then as a group we will enter the Council Chamber a few
minutes before the 7:30 meeting start.

It really is critical to try and get a large number of people together at this
meeting to show that there is a large constituency that cares about this issue.
It isn't easy to get City Council to put their energy into fixing citizen
concerns, and it only seems to work when a large and vocal group comes together
to advocate for change.

This meeting will be the first of a few. We'll announce the other meeting(s) as
soon as we work out more details. We hope to get the City Council to realize
that there is strong support for building more trails that are open to bikes.
We also want them to understand that concerns about safety, trail damage, and
other issues have been successfully resolved in dozens of towns across the US.
There are so many examples of success that it will be hard for people to ignore
the facts.

Our long term goal would be to see the entire Ridgeline trail system have access
to MTB use. We also hope to ensure that all future trail expansions will have a
MTB component unless unique circumstances prevent the possibility.

Stay tuned for a Facebook group forming within hours, called MTB Eugene. This
group will become the main advocacy group for mountain bike issues in and
adjacent to Eugene. Become a fan of MTB Eugene, and RSVP to attend the Council
meeting on the Facebook page. Also, send invites to your friends and family.

Finally, we'd love to hear any ideas or suggestions that you may have about how
to help this cause. Anyone interested in getting involved can contact me, and
I'll add you to the planning group.

Thanks,
mAtt, Al, A-dog, Eric, Tyler and Steve

May, 2009, Volunteer Trail Work updates

Ever wonder how the trail that you are riding on is so good? Volunteer work from our group, and day to day work by the Forest Service get most of the job done for the Willamette National Forest. There are a couple great photos below of what a few skilled sawyers can accomplish in an afternoon. Many other parts to the process including bench work and brushing take place every year to keep the trails open and maintain the great quality that we have. Interested in being part of this? The best way is to join our Yahoo! group from the link above. We'll have a few more work parties this spring and then its time to ride all summer! Cheers, Lou

Middle Fork National Recreation Trail Designation, June 2, 2007

That's right, Middle Fork is now at the same status as the McKenzie River Trail. Let's join in on the celebration and show up to do some work too. We're the ones that have kept this trail open for years, so let's make sure we go out and show them what we can do. Do you see the picture, it's a mountain biker, not a hiker or horse rider! This shows how persistent work and efforts by all riders to repect others on the trail and preserve the trail has paid off. Click on the image to download the brochure with directions and times. I'll be posting some chatter about what work we can do and meeting times on the Yahoo! group.

Cheers, Lou

Back to the usual. Biking and Trailwork is on the agenda!

Trailwork on Tire Mountain last weekend called for cutting out some old snags, and new blowdown from the winter. I'll have some photos online soon. Scott has the saw carrying bike all rigged up, so we were able to ride to our destination and get the job done.

Single Speeders, check this out.

Tim has made a chart detailing gear ratio's. Download the Excel file.
